Government Recognizes Organic Carbon Enhancers from Compressed Bio Gas Plants as Fertilizer
22 February 2025, New Delhi: The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has amended the Fertiliser (Inorganic, Organic or Mixed) (Control) Order, 1985, to include Organic Carbon Enhancers from Compressed Bio Gas (CBG) plants as a recognized category of fertilizers. The amendment was notified through S.O. 897(E) under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, on February 17, 2025.
With this change, the definition of fertilizers now explicitly covers nano fertilizers and organic carbon enhancers from CBG plants. The government has also introduced Schedule VIII in the existing order to specify regulations and classifications for Organic Carbon Enhancers.
What are Organic Carbon Enhancers from CBG Plants?
These enhancers refer to organic materials produced through fermentation processes, either as a main product or a byproduct in CBG plants. When applied to soil or plant growth media, they help increase or maintain organic carbon content, thereby improving soil health and plant growth.
Impact on Agriculture and Sustainability
This amendment is expected to encourage sustainable agricultural practices by promoting the use of organic soil enhancers derived from renewable bioresources. It also aligns with India’s efforts to reduce chemical fertilizer dependency and enhance soil organic matter, contributing to improved farm productivity and environmental conservation.
Government’s Push for Bio-Based Inputs
The inclusion of organic carbon enhancers in the fertilizer framework signifies the government’s commitment to promoting bio-based agricultural inputs. The move is likely to support Compressed Bio Gas (CBG) projects and encourage waste-to-wealth initiatives in the agriculture sector.
The amendment came into effect on the date of its publication in the Official Gazette and is expected to pave the way for wider adoption of organic carbon enhancers in Indian agriculture.
