Government Holds High-Stakes Talks with Farmers in Chandigarh, Next Meeting on May 4
19 March 2025, New Delhi: In a continued effort to address farmers’ concerns, the Government of India held a high-level meeting with farmer representatives in Chandigarh today. This marks the third such meeting in the city, following discussions on February 14 and February 22, 2025.
Chaired by Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the meeting saw participation from Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Pralhad Joshi and Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal. Punjab’s Cabinet Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian, along with key farmer leaders including Jagjit Singh Dallewal, senior officials from the central and state governments, and representatives from various agricultural bodies, were also present.
During the three-hour discussion, the government reaffirmed its commitment to farmers’ welfare, highlighting ongoing policy interventions to address agricultural challenges. Farmer leaders restated their demands, leading to an in-depth exchange on the legal, economic, and structural aspects of their concerns.
Following the deliberations, the government announced plans to conduct wider stakeholder consultations involving farmer organizations, state governments, traders, exporters, and the food processing industry. Officials assured that talks would continue in a spirit of cooperation and open dialogue.
Union Ministers urged the farming community to prioritize discussions over protests, emphasizing that meaningful solutions could only emerge through engagement. They reiterated that the government remains committed to listening to farmers and acting in their best interest.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan described the talks as constructive and confirmed that the next round of discussions is scheduled for May 4, 2025.
