GI-Tagged Citrus from Northeast India Gains Prominence in Craft Gin Industry

12 March 2025, New Delhi: The northeastern region of India, renowned for its distinctive agricultural produce, is home to Assam’s Kaji Nemu (Citrus limon) and Meghalaya’s Khasi Mandarin (Citrus reticulata). These citrus varieties, recognized with Geographical Indication (GI) tags, are strengthening their presence in both domestic and international markets. Their inclusion in the craft gin sector, particularly in Cherrapunji Eastern Craft Gin, highlights their growing importance.

Kaji Nemu, commonly known as the Assam Lemon, is characterized by its elongated shape and tangy flavor. Holding a GI tag since 2019, it was also designated as Assam’s state fruit in 2024. This recognition has opened doors for its export to global markets, including London and the UAE. Widely used in Assamese cuisine, Kaji Nemu’s unique citrus notes have made it a key ingredient in Cherrapunji Eastern Craft Gin, enhancing its flavor profile.

Meanwhile, Khasi Mandarin from Meghalaya, locally called Soh Niamtra, is prized for its perfect blend of sweetness and acidity. Securing a GI tag in 2014, this variety has seen rising demand, especially in the Middle East. Initiatives through Public-Private Partnerships have enabled farmers to access broader markets. With its naturally high sugar content, Khasi Mandarin is not only ideal for processed products but has also found a place in craft gin, adding to its global appeal.

Cherrapunji Eastern Craft Gin, which incorporates these GI-tagged citrus fruits, has earned international accolades, including recognition at the Spirits Business Awards and the San Francisco World Spirits Awards. This fusion of indigenous ingredients with premium gin production showcases the potential of northeast India’s agricultural heritage in the global spirits industry.
