FSSAI Withdraws Notification on A1 and A2 Milk Products, Plans Further Stakeholder Consultation

27 August 2024, New Delhi: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has withdrawn its notification on the marketing and sale of milk and milk products labeled as A1 and A2. The initial advisory, issued to all E-commerce Food Business Operators (FBOs), directed them to remove claims related to A1 and A2 proteins from their products and websites. This decision followed FSSAI’s examination, which found that distinguishing milk based on A1 and A2 protein types could be misleading and non-compliant with the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and its associated regulations.

FSSAI had initially asserted that the differentiation between A1 and A2 milk is tied to the protein structure, specifically beta-casein, and that using such claims on milk fat products was not scientifically substantiated. Consequently, FBOs were instructed to cease such marketing practices and were given six months to exhaust pre-printed labels with these claims.

However, in response to concerns raised by stakeholders, FSSAI has decided to withdraw the advisory and engage in further consultations before issuing a final directive.
