18 April 2025, New Delhi: The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Dr. Mangi Lal Jat as the new Secretary of the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE) and Director General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).

Dr. Jat, who currently serves as the Deputy Director General – Research (Acting) and Director of the Global Research Program at the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), Hyderabad, brings with him extensive experience in agricultural research, particularly in semi-arid and dryland farming systems.

His appointment will be effective for a period of three years from the date he assumes charge, or until further orders, whichever comes earlier.

The official order, issued by Manisha Saxena, Secretary of the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, highlights Dr. Jat’s significant contribution to global research in sustainable agriculture and climate-resilient farming practices. His leadership at ICRISAT has been instrumental in advancing innovations for smallholder farmers in dryland areas.
