11 January 2023, Chhattisgarh: Chhattisgarh farmers will now get accurate weather forecasts and will be able to protect their crops from weather uncertainties at the development block level now.

Doppler radar will soon be installed at the Indira Gandhi Agricultural University Raipur campus to give accurate weather forecasts at a cost of about Rs. 10 crores.

Under the chairmanship of Dr. Girish Chandel, Vice Chancellor of Indira Gandhi Agricultural University, Raipur, an agreement was signed here today between Indira Gandhi Agricultural University and India Meteorological Department, New Delhi for the establishment of Doppler radar.

As per the contract, necessary land will be provided by Indira Gandhi Agricultural University for the installation of the Doppler radar and its installation cost and operation expenses will be borne by the India Meteorological Department.

On this occasion, Vice-Chancellor of Agriculture University, Dr. Girish Chandel said, “Due to non-installation of Doppler radar in Chhattisgarh, accurate weather forecast could not be obtained till now. With the installation of Doppler radar, accurate weather information and forecast will be available up to the development block level, which will benefit 37 lakh farmers and common people of the state.”

He said that at present Doppler radar facility was available in Nagpur and Visakhapatnam due to which the farmers of Chhattisgarh could not get accurate weather forecast information.

Deputy Director General of the Indian Meteorological Department, Dr. M.L. Sahu said that C band Doppler radar is being set up in Raipur, whose wavelength is 4 to 8 gigabytes. This gives accurate information about the particles of ice and water in the atmosphere. It can also accurately predict the arrival of storms. In this way, an accurate forecast of sudden weather changes is obtained.
