Chhattisgarh: Peeparchedi Irrigation Project to Resume After 45 Years, Benefiting 5,000 Farmers

13 May 2025, Raipur: The long-pending Peeparchedi Irrigation Project in Madeli village of Gariaband district, which had been stalled for 45 years, has finally received the green signal. Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai has announced the resumption and completion of this project, rekindling hope for around 5,000 farmers across more than 10 nearby villages who will benefit from improved irrigation facilities. This move is expected to boost agricultural productivity and improve the economic well-being of farmers in the region.

The project was initially launched in 1977 with the construction of a dam on the Ghunghutti Nala to provide irrigation to surrounding villages. However, work came to a halt in 1980 due to the implementation of the Forest Act, which led to the denial of environmental clearance. Since then, the project remained incomplete for decades, dimming the hopes of local farmers.

Recently, the Central Government granted environmental clearance for the project. Following this, Chief Minister Sai formally announced its revival during the ‘Su-Shasan Tihar Samadhan Shivir’ (Good Governance Festival and Solution Camp). He stated, “This is not just a project, but a victory of farmers’ struggle, patience, and hope. This is the true spirit of Su-Shasan Tihar – bringing real change in people’s lives.”

Once completed, the project will provide permanent irrigation support to farmers, increasing crop yields and promoting economic stability. Farmers in the region, who have been dependent on rainfall for years, now look forward to a consistent water supply. The project is also seen as a key step toward the holistic development of the area.

However, timely completion and ensuring that the benefits reach all eligible farmers remain major challenges. Local residents hope that the announcement will translate into real action and that water will finally reach their fields – not just stay on paper.
