23 September 2024, New Delhi: The Department of Entomology at CSK Himachal Pradesh KrishiVishvavidyalaya (CSKHPKV), in partnership with the Entomological Society of India (ESI), proudly hosted the final round of the North Zone Inter-University Entomology Quiz-2024 today. This vibrant competition brought together talented postgraduate students from seven distinguished agricultural universities across North India, highlighting their expertise in the fascinating world of entomology. The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Naveen Kumar, congratulated the winning team and commended the organization of such events, highlighting their role in enhancing students’ knowledge in a competitive environment.
Following a rigorous preliminary online quiz held on September 9, 2024, which screened 15 teams, the finals featured participants from CCSHAU, Hisar; CSKHPKV Palampur; Dr.YSPUHF, Nauni, Solan; PAU Ludhiana; RARI Durgapur, Jaipur; SKNAU, Jobner; and SKUAST-Jammu. Dr. Poonam Jasrotia, Assistant Director General (Plant Protection & Biosafety), ICAR, New Delhi, joined the preliminary quiz, encouraging students to pursue innovative research and contribute significantly to the field of entomology.
The team from CSKHPKV, consisting of Arpit, Manoj, and Shashwat, emerged as champions of the North Zone Inter-University Entomology Quiz-2024. They were followed by runners-up from PAU, Ludhiana (Akhilandeswari, Mridula, and Nitika) and SKUAST, Jammu (Abhishek, Vishrava, and Yashasvini). Their impressive knowledge and teamwork stood out throughout the competition.
The final competition consisted of five dynamic rounds: choice, no choice, visual, fastest finger first, and rapid-fire. Each segment tested not only the participants’ knowledge of insect morphology, taxonomy, and pest management but also their quick thinking and adaptability. The visual round captivated the audience, while the rapid-fire segment highlighted the participants’ agility and depth of understanding.
Dr.R KKapila, Dean of PGS at CSKHPKV as the chief guest, graced the valedictory function. In his address, he praised the participants for their commitment and passion for entomology, emphasizing the vital role such competitions play in fostering knowledge and collaboration among emerging researchers. Esteemed guests included Dr. P.K. Chhuneja, ESI President (NZ); Dr. Sachin Suroshe, General Secretary of ESI; and Dr. V.V. Ramamurthy, ESI President, who participated online, highlighting the event’s significance in advancing entomological research. The event was further enriched by the presence of Dr.Desh Raj, Former DEE&HOD (Entomology) CSKHPKV Palampur, along with retired faculty members, whose experience and dedication inspired participants.
Dr. A.K. Sood, Head of the Department of Entomology, commended the participants for their enthusiasm and highlighted the crucial role of entomological research in modern agriculture, underscoring the essential functions insects play in our ecosystem. The quiz was expertly coordinated by Dr.Sukh Dev Sharma, Principal Scientist (Entomology), with valuable support from Dr.Suman Sanjta, Assistant Professor (Entomology), as Quiz Co-Coordinator. Experts from various universities served on different committees to ensure unbiased results, enhancing the integrity of the competition. This event not only celebrated the achievements of all participants but also underscored the importance of entomology in today’s world. The enthusiasm and dedication exhibited promise a bright future for research and innovation in this vital field.
