Certificate Course on Shrimp Crop Insurance and Loss Assessment
10 August 2024, New Delhi: ICAR-Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture organised a series of Certificate Courses on ‘Shrimp Crop Insurance and Loss Assessment jointly with ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Education at ICAR-CIFE, Kolkata from 5th-9th August 2024.
The Chief Guest, Dr. Pradeep Dey, Director, ICAR-Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute, Kolkata, accentuated that ICAR-ATARI Kolkata and its ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendras are ready to provide all support to the shrimp farmers and other stakeholders.
The Guest of Honour, Dr. B.K. Dutta, Director, Vivekanand Institute of Biotechnology, Kolkata under Ramakrishna Mission briefed about the efforts of ICAR-CIBA and ICAR-CIFE and ensured the support of VIBT under the Ramakrishna Mission to them.
Dr. A.K. Jena, Additional Director (Fisheries Science) Department of Fisheries, Govt. of West Bengal stated that aquaculture is gaining importance in the State economy and the courses would provide technological skills to the shrimp farmers.
Dr. Kuldeep Kumar Lal, Director, ICAR-CIBA in his inaugural address highlighted the International and Indian shrimp industry scenarios and the importance of shrimp crop insurance.
Dr. C.N. Ravishankar, Director & Vice-Chancellor, ICAR-CIFE addressed the valedictory session by highlighting the importance of the course from an educational point of view and he expressed his plan for designing a diploma course based on this programme.
The core course content covered a comprehensive overview of the global and Indian shrimp industry, including the origins and evolution of shrimp crop insurance, crop cultivation, and the management of nutrition, feed, and disease. It also addressed socio-economic analysis, the development and specifics of shrimp insurance policies, and the roles of surveyors and loss assessors. Additionally, the course included a field visit to a shrimp farm and the ICAR-CIBA Kakdwip Research Centre, West Bengal.
About 45 participants, including Officials from the Insurance industry, State Departments, Startups, farmers and students, attended the programme.
