CCSHAU Signed an Agreement With Sugar Mil
26 July 2024, Chandigarh: The new varieties COH 188, COH 176 and COH 179 developed by Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University will lead sugarcane cultivation in the state in future. HAU varieties COH 56 and COH 119 have been very popular in their time. While COH 160 is popular not only in Haryana but also in the neighbouring states. These varieties have brought a revolution in sugarcane cultivation. These views were expressed by the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. B.R Kamboj during a Memorandum of Understanding with M/s Saraswati Sugar Mills Limited, Yamunanagar. In the presence of Vice Chancellor, Prof. B.R Kamboj and Chief Executive Officer, Sugar Mills, Sh. SK Sachdeva, this MoU was signed by Director Human Resource Management, Dr. Atul Dhingra on behalf of HAU and Senior Vice President, Sh. D.P Singh on behalf of the above mill.
Vice Chancellor, Prof. Kamboj informed that sugarcane is a very important cash crop of India and Haryana. Sugarcane is grown in an area of 5.17 million hectares in India with a production of 439.4 million tonnes and productivity of 849 quintals/hectare. In Haryana this crop is grown in an area of 1.07 lakh hectares with a production of 88.82 lakh tonnes and productivity of 819 quintals/hectare. This crop plays a very important role in the economy of the farmers and also plays a very important role in the national and state economy by providing raw material to the sugar industry. This crop and sugar industry has become even more important in the emerging scenario as sugarcane will be the main crop for ethanol production for blending in petrol. He said that the university is striving to develop technology partnerships with sugar mills for rapid development, multiplication and distribution of new sugarcane varieties to the farmers of Haryana. Mill testing is also an important parameter in releasing new sugarcane varieties.
Chief Executive Officer, Sugar Mills, Sh. S.K Sachdeva said that farmers cultivating sugarcane, sugar mills processing this crop and the government provide favourable policy support. There are 14 sugar mills in the state of Haryana. Sugar mills process sugarcane to produce sugar, ethanol and electricity. M/s Saraswati Sugar Mills Limited is one of the largest sugar mills in the country, which has a high crushing capacity. This MoU will go a long way in promoting partnership between research institutes and the sugar industry.
Regional Director, Regional Research Center, Karnal, Dr. Rajbir Garg gave detailed information about the contribution of HAU in the sugarcane crop. Media Advisor, Dr. Sandeep Arya, Dr. Renu Munjal and IPR Cell in-charge, Dr. Yogesh Jindal were present.
