Cabinet Clears ₹3,850 Crore for DAP Subsidy Extension, Total Relief Crosses ₹6,475 Crore
05 January 2025, New Delhi: In a significant move aimed at bolstering the agricultural sector, the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the extension of the One-Time Special Package on Di-Ammonium Phosphate (DAP) beyond the Nutrient-Based Subsidy (NBS) framework. This decision, effective from January 1, 2025, and continuing until further notice, is intended to ensure the sustainable availability of DAP fertilizer at affordable prices for farmers. The financial outlay for this extension is estimated to be approximately ₹3,850 crore.
Strengthening Farmer Welfare Amid Global Challenges
Since its introduction under the NBS scheme in April 2010, 28 grades of P&K fertilizers, including DAP, have been provided to farmers at subsidized rates. Despite the challenges posed by geopolitical tensions and global market volatility, the Indian government has remained steadfast in its commitment to maintaining stable prices for DAP. The Special Package, which was initially approved in July 2024 for the period from April 1, 2024, to December 31, 2024, has now been extended, bringing the total financial commitment for the scheme to over ₹6,475 crore.
The government’s decision ensures that farmers will continue to access DAP at an additional subsidy of ₹3,500 per metric ton, over and above the existing NBS subsidy. This move underscores the government’s farmer-centric approach, guaranteeing that DAP remains affordable for agricultural activities across the Kharif and Rabi seasons of 2024-25.
Ensuring Smooth Implementation
The extended package will be implemented with immediate effect and will continue until further orders. By maintaining affordability and ensuring the seamless availability of DAP, the government aims to provide a significant relief to farmers, who are the backbone of the Indian economy.
Key Benefits
This strategic decision will not only stabilize the availability of DAP at subsidized prices but also reinforce India’s agricultural productivity and sustainability. By alleviating the burden of high fertilizer costs, the initiative ensures that farmers can focus on enhancing their yields without financial strain.
This extension reaffirms the government’s dedication to the welfare of farmers, further solidifying India’s vision of a self-reliant and robust agricultural sector.
