Apple farmers of Himachal demand an import tariff of 100%

19 January 2023, Himachal Pradesh: Apple growers of Himachal Pradesh have high hope from Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu to fulfill their long pending demands. 

On behalf of farmers, the apple growers association of the state has submitted a 12-point demand letter to the government.  The main demand of producers is to implement import duty on apples by 100%. 

India currently imports apples from 44 countries because of which the Himachal farmers face strong steep competition on price. The farmers have also requested to implement a minimum support price for apples as it is one of the major crops in the state. The apple farmers demand MSP for A-grade apples at Rs. 60, B-grade at Rs. 44, and C-grade at Rs. 24.

Himachal Pradesh Apple Growers Association president Sohan Thakur said that the apple farmers of the state are facing many challenges and there is a need for intervention from the state government. 

He said to ensure the early redressal of their grievances, they have submitted a memorandum to the chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu through the sub-divisional magistrate.
