Andhra Pradesh Sweet Lime Farmers Struggle Amid Low Prices and Environmental Challenges

06 August 2024, Andhra Pradesh: Farmers cultivating sweet lime, or ‘chini,’ in the rain shadow districts of Anantapur and Sri Sathya Sai in Andhra Pradesh are facing significant difficulties due to declining market prices and environmental issues. These districts, which span a combined 9,111 acres dedicated to sweet lime production, are well-regarded for their horticultural efforts.

Recent challenges have been compounded by inadequate rainfall, leading to issues such as root rot and pest infestations, which have reduced yields. Farmers are also expressing frustration with the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) government, claiming that it has neglected the agricultural sector. The price of sweet lime has plummeted from ₹50,000-₹60,000 per tonne to as low as ₹12,000, leaving farmers struggling financially.

The situation is made worse by the influence of brokers who manipulate prices to their advantage. As a result, some farmers are forced to hand over their crops to brokers to manage their debts. The farming community is urgently requesting government intervention to stabilize prices and promote sustainable farming practices in the region.
