After the Success of Bharat Brand Fertilizer, Indian Govt to Introduce Bharat Beej Brand
28 March 2025, New Delhi: The Ministry of Cooperation has taken a significant step toward improving agricultural productivity by establishing the Bhartiya Beej Sahkari Samiti Limited (BBSSL) under the Multi-State Cooperative Societies (MSCS) Act, 2002. The initiative aims to streamline the production, procurement, and distribution of high-quality seeds under a single brand name, ‘Bharat Beej,’ leveraging the extensive cooperative network across the country.
With an impressive membership of 19,674 cooperative societies, including 334 from Jharkhand, BBSSL is poised to strengthen seed availability for farmers, particularly those in remote and rural regions. The organization has already obtained a seed license from the Government of Jharkhand, ensuring compliance with regulations. Its well-structured logistics framework is expected to facilitate the timely delivery of superior seeds to farmers, enhancing crop yields and boosting agricultural efficiency.
To further promote the adoption of Bharat Beej brand seeds among small and marginal farmers, BBSSL has devised a multi-pronged awareness strategy. The plan includes social media campaigns, outreach through the BBSSL website, farmers’ meets, regional workshops, seminars, and participation in national, state, and regional agricultural events. Demonstration programs, including Front-Line Demonstrations (FLD) and Cluster Front-Line Demonstrations (CFLD), will be conducted in collaboration with State Departments of Agriculture to educate farmers about the benefits of quality seeds.
The seed sector in India is governed by stringent regulations under the Seeds Act, 1966, the Seed Rules, 1968, and the Seeds (Control) Order, 1983, ensuring the quality of seeds available in the market. The State Governments have been empowered to monitor seed quality and prevent the distribution of substandard or spurious seeds.
Additionally, the Department of Agriculture & Farmer’s Welfare plays a crucial role in seed distribution by allocating breeder seeds to both state and private seed companies, ensuring a steady supply of foundation and certified seeds for farmers. To enhance transparency and efficiency in seed distribution, the government launched the Seed Authentication, Traceability & Holistic Inventory (SATHI) portal on April 19, 2023. This digital initiative enables the tracking of seeds across the supply chain, from nucleus and breeder seeds to foundation and certified seeds, integrating private agencies, seed dealers, and distributors into a unified system.
