Above-Normal Rains Expected Across India, Says IMD’s First Monsoon Forecast
18 April 2025, New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has released its first forecast for this year’s monsoon season (June to September), predicting above-normal rainfall across the country. This forecast holds great significance for agriculture and the rural economy, as it is expected to boost the sowing and yield of Kharif crops.
According to the IMD, there is a 59% probability of above-normal rainfall during this year’s southwest monsoon. This is likely to expand the area under Kharif cultivation, enhance agricultural output, and strengthen the rural economy, which plays a crucial role in the nation’s overall economic framework, especially since a large portion of the population depends on agriculture and related activities.
However, some regions—such as parts of Northeast India, Tamil Nadu, and Bihar—may receive below-normal rainfall. Still, most parts of the country, particularly the ‘Monsoon Core Zone’ where farmers rely heavily on monsoon rains for cultivation, are expected to receive above-normal precipitation. Rainfall in this zone could exceed 91 cm.
