World Food Prize Foundation Pays Tribute to Jimmy Carter, First Foundation Council of Advisors Member
31 December 2024, US: On behalf of the World Food Prize Laureates and our Council of Advisors, the World Food Prize Foundation extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of President Jimmy Carter.
President Carter was a visionary leader whose dedication to alleviating global hunger and promoting peace has left an indelible mark on humanity. As the first member selected for our Council of Advisors, his collaboration with our founder, Dr. Norman Borlaug, exemplified a shared commitment to advancing agricultural development and food security worldwide.
Their partnership was particularly impactful through the Sasakawa-Global 2000 initiative, launched in 1986 to improve agricultural productivity in sub-Saharan Africa. This program introduced innovative farming techniques and improved crop varieties, transforming food systems and empowering millions of smallholder farmers. Reflecting on their collaboration, President Carter remarked, “It has been an honor to collaborate with Dr. Borlaug. He is a true humanitarian and a dear friend.”
Mashal Husain, incoming President, World Food Prize Foundation, said, “In every facet of his work, President Carter embodied the humanitarian spirit at the heart of the World Food Prize. His belief in the power of individuals to change the world inspired countless youth, leaders, and innovators to join the global fight against hunger.”
In 1994, President Carter played a key role at the inaugural session of the World Food Prize Global Youth Institute. Alongside Dr. Borlaug and Dr. Muhammad Yunus, he inspired the 14 Iowa high school students who participated, giving them the unique opportunity to interact with three Nobel Peace Prize Laureates united in their fight against hunger and poverty. This historic gathering set the foundation for a program that, 30 years later, continues to empower youth to lead in the quest for global food security.
Foundation President Emeritus Ambassador Kenneth Quinn said, “At the inaugural Global Youth Institute, President Carter joined Dr. Borlaug and Dr. Yunus to guide and inspire the first generation of young leaders. His presence at that historic gathering set the tone for what the Global Youth Institute has become—a beacon of hope and opportunity for students worldwide.”
President Carter’s deep commitment to addressing the root causes of hunger was matched by his unyielding belief in the power of diplomacy, agriculture and education to build a more equitable world. His advocacy for human rights and global development has profoundly influenced the mission and work of the Foundation.
“President Carter’s leadership in addressing the root causes of hunger and poverty remains a guiding light for all of us,” said Ambassador Terry Branstad, President, World Food Prize Foundation. “We are deeply honored to have had his partnership in our mission to improve global food security and advance Dr. Borlaug’s legacy.”
As we reflect on President Carter’s extraordinary life and legacy, we are reminded of his unwavering belief in the capacity of humanity to overcome its greatest challenges through compassion, collaboration, and innovation. As the first member of the World Food Prize Foundation’s Council of Advisors, President Carter helped shape our mission and advance the vision of Dr. Borlaug. His enduring contributions to peace, human rights, and food security will forever inspire the work of the Foundation and all those dedicated to building a better, hunger-free world
