23 March 2021, China: The Import and Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade) cited statistics from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) that US’s imports of all types of mangoes in 2020 reached 728,920 tons, worth 916 million USD, up 11.5% in volume and 12% in value compared to 2019.
Average import price of mango reached 1.26 USD/kg, up 0.5% compared to 2019. In 2020, Mexico is the biggest supplier of mangoes to the US, reaching 435.24 thousand tons, worth 478.4 million USD, up more than 7% in volume and 8.3% in value compared to 2019.
The proportion of mango imports from Mexico accounted for 59.7% of the total US mango imports, down 2.47 percentage points compared to 2019.
Followed markets are Peru, Ecuador, Brazil, India … Notably, Vietnam is the 14th biggest mango supplier to the US, the import volume and value of Vietnam’s mango increased sharply to 2,100 tons, worth 4.61 million USD, up 66% in volume and more than 70% in value compared to 2019.
The average import price of Vietnam mango was high at 2.2 USD/kg, up 2.5% compared to 2019. However, the proportion of mango imports from Vietnam was still low, accounting for only 0.3% of the total volume of the US’s imported mangoes.
In the structure of types of imported mangoes in 2020, the US imports fresh mangoes the most. Fresh mangoes account for 75.3% of the total volume of the US’s imported mangoes.
Mexico, Peru, Ecuador and Brazil are the four markets that provide the biggest amount of fresh mangoes to the US, imports from these four markets account for 94.4% of the total volume of fresh mangoes.
Import and Export Department stressed: “Fresh mangoes are very potential in the context that the COVID-19 pandemic is still complicated. Therefore, Vietnamese exporters need to focus on boosting export of this type in the coming time”.
