Vietnam: National Strategy on Climate Change for the period to 2050 approved

08 August 2022, Vietnam: “National strategy on climate change for the period to 2050” has just been approved by Deputy Prime Minister Le Van Thanh on Decision No. 896/QD-TTg dated July 26, 2022.

Accordingly, the Strategy sets out the overarching objective of proactively and effectively adapting, reducing vulnerability, loss and damage due to climate change; reduce greenhouse gas emissions according to the zero net emission target by 2050, actively and responsibly contribute to the international community in protecting the earth’s climate system; take advantage of opportunities from climate change response to transform growth models, improve resilience and competitiveness of the economy..

Regarding climate change adaptation, the Strategy strives to reduce vulnerability and risk caused by climate change impacts through enhancing the resilience and adaptive capacity of natural, economic and social systems,  mitigating damage caused by natural disasters and increasing extremes of climate due to climate change.

Strategies to strive by 2050 to effectively manage water and land resources, improve environmental quality in service of socio-economic development; maintain stable forest cover at 43% and ensure national forest area; ensure 100% of the population provided with clean and hygienic water; 100% of households in areas frequently affected by natural disasters have safe houses; Disaster risk insurance for production and business activities, assets of enterprises and society.

Regarding the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the Strategy strives to achieve the net emission target of zero by 2050, actively and responsibly contributing to the international community to protect the earth’s climate system; improve the growth quality and competitiveness of the economy.
