20 June 2022, Vietnam: China has agreed to import passion fruit, while durian export is negotiating at the last stage… In the US market, green-skinned pomelo export is also completing the final steps… These are good signs and great export opportunities for Vietnamese fruit.

At the Information Forum connecting agricultural production and consumption with the topic “Strengthening solutions for sustainable development of production and consumption of key fruit products in the South” recently, Mr. Le Van Thiet – Deputy Director of Plant Protection Department, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development – said that China has agreed to import Vietnamese passion fruit into Guangdong province through two border gates of Lang Son and Quang Ninh provinces based on pilot mode.

In terms of general conditions, passion fruit must come from an area with a growing area code, with a packing code, and must be pest-free and meet food safety.

Along with passion fruit, negotiations with China on durian exports are also in the final stages. The two sides are finalizing the Protocol on export regulations on planting areas, distributor codes and pest management. In the US market, Vietnam has now exported to this market 6 types of fruits including dragon fruit, mango, lychee, longan, rambutan, and star apple. The two sides are in the process of negotiating the final step of opening the export door of pomelo products by taking note of consumer demand in the United States.

Taking advantage of export market opportunities, some localities have taken steps to prepare planting areas as well as sources of raw materials. Mr. Doan Ngoc Co – Deputy Director of Gia Lai Department of Agriculture and Rural Development – said that this province has just put passion fruit on the list four key fruit trees in the province and has the largest area in the country of 4,000 hectares. By 2025, this province is oriented to develop passion fruit area to 20,000 hectares, becoming the largest passion fruit capital in the country.

There are still certain difficulties in exporting agricultural products in general and fruits in particular. As for pomelos exported to the US market, although it has reached the final stage, however, according to the business, it is extremely difficult to find the raw material areas that are granted the planting area codes for export linkage, easy to duplicate, entangled with other units and businesses.
