Vice Minister Ma Youxiang Attends G20 Agriculture Ministers’ Meeting

19 September 2024, China: The G20 Agriculture Ministers’ Meeting was held in Cuiabá, Brazil, from Sept. 12–13. Ma Youxiang, Vice Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, led a delegation to the meeting.

In the first session, Vice Minister Ma shared China’s approaches to building a sustainable agriculture and food system, including ensuring the stable and safe supply of grain and key agricultural products; increasing farmers’ income through developing new industries and business models; improving agricultural S&T and equipment; promoting green transformation; and building beautiful rural areas with pleasant living environments and thriving businesses. Vice Minister Ma called on all parties to increase investment in capital, services, and talent for agricultural and rural development; to foster the promotion and application of advanced technologies and boost exchange and cooperation; and to ensure undisrupted global trade in agro-products, so as to safeguard global food security.

In the second session, Vice Minister Ma noted that China is known for being a large country with numerous smallholder farmers. The Chinese government remains committed to supporting smallholder farmers through institutional arrangements, technology empowerment, service enhancement, capacity building, and financial assistance. These efforts ensure that smallholder farmers can embrace modern agriculture. Vice Minister Ma suggested that the global community should: 1) accelerate developing agricultural machinery and equipment suitable for smallholder farmers; 2) improve professional social services; 3) extend value chains to boost income; and 4) strengthen resilience to risks and challenges and leave no smallholder farmer behind, thereby contributing to the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals for poverty reduction and hunger eradication.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock of Brazil presided over the meeting. Agriculture ministers from G20 members and invited countries, representatives from international and regional organizations such as the UN Food and Agriculture Organization and the Inter-American Development Bank, as well as representatives of Business 20 and the head of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture attended the meeting. The meeting adopted the G20 Agriculture Ministers Declaration 2024.
