The World Food Prize Foundation Announces Changes to the Foundation Board and Council of Advisors
29 March 2025, US: The World Food Prize Foundation today announced a realignment of its Council of Advisors and the addition of a new member to its Board of Directors.
Since the passing of Chairman John Ruan III in 2011, Paul E. Schickler has led both the Foundation’s Board of Directors and its Council of Advisors with dedication and vision. Today, the Foundation is proud to announce that CEO Thomas Vilsack will now also serve as Chair of the Council of Advisors, further strengthening the organization’s leadership and commitment to its mission.
“This transition reflects the strength of the Foundation’s leadership and the enduring legacy of the Ruan family’s commitment to global food security,” said Schickler, who continues as Board Chair. “With Governor Vilsack serving as Chair of the Council of Advisors, we will continue to honor that legacy while expanding our impact. His leadership and vision will further enhance our efforts to foster innovation and collaboration in addressing the world’s most pressing food issues.”
The Foundation’s Council of Advisors is comprised of distinguished leaders and experts providing the Foundation Board and staff with valuable perspectives and recommendations. Each Council member brings with them their own expertise and experience. Past members include former U.S. Presidents George H.W. Bush and Jimmy Carter, World Food Prize Laureates, university Presidents, international dignitaries, world-renowned scientists and various industry leaders.
“I am honored to serve as Chair of the Council of Advisors and to work alongside such a distinguished group of leaders committed to advancing global food security,” said Governor Vilsack. “I look forward to collaborating with the Council and Foundation President Mashal Husain to continue to elevate the Foundation’s impact, strengthen partnerships and build on the legacy of innovation and leadership that defines this organization.”
The Foundation Board of Directors assures the financial integrity of the Foundation by adopting the budget and assuring that the Foundation’s activities conform to that budget. The Board also selects Foundation officers—who serve on the Board— and the members of the Council of Advisors.
Ambassador Terry Branstad, former Foundation President and Iowa Governor, will transition to a member of the Board of Directors.
“I’m honored to join the World Food Prize Foundation Board of Directors,” Branstad said. “It has been a privilege to support the Foundation’s mission, and I look forward to contributing in this new role to further its impact on global food and nutrition security.”
