03 April 2023, US: A.S. (Al) Clausi was a scientist, innovator and businessman who deeply understood the role of food in nourishing our bodies and our souls. As executive vice president of General Foods, he worked closely with Dr. Norman Borlaug to establish the World Food Prize in 1986 and was the first chairman of the World Food Prize Council of Advisors.

When General Foods merged with Kraft four years later and decided not to continue sponsoring the award, Clausi worked tirelessly to find new funders for the World Food Prize. He played an integral role in connecting Dr. Borlaug with John Ruan, Sr., of Des Moines, Iowa, whose generosity and vision brought the World Food Prize to Iowa, Borlaug’s home state.

Clausi continued to serve the World Food Prize Foundation continuously until 2019, when he stepped down at age 97. We extend our condolences to Clausi’s family, friends and colleagues. Though he is gone, his innovative spirit will continue to serve as an inspiration for us all.

“I had the privilege to work with Al for 20 years as a founding member of the Council of Advisors,” said Ambassador Ken Quinn, President Emeritus of the World Food Prize Foundation. “He and his wife, Janet, were always front and center each October at the World Food Prize celebration. He took enormous pride in the fact that the organization he helped establish in 1986 had grown to become viewed as the ‘Nobel Prize’ for food and agriculture.”
