FAO Director-general Underscores Evaluation’s Role In Transforming Agrifood Systems At Global Conference

06 March 2025, Rome: FAO Director-General QU Dongyu today emphasized the crucial role of evaluation in enhancing impact, fostering learning and driving innovation during the Joint High-Level Global Conference on Multi-Dimensional Evaluation for Influence and Transformation. The FAO-hosted conference, co-organized by the Independent Evaluation Office of the New Development Bank and the International Development Evaluation Association, brings together global experts to discuss how evaluation can enhance the effectiveness of policies, programs, and investments.

“Evaluation is not just an accountability exercise; it is the cornerstone of learning, retreating, and innovation,” the Director-General said in his keynote address at the opening ceremony. He underscored the importance of using data-driven analysis to identify challenges and opportunities for more efficient, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable agrifood systems.

The conference held from 5-6 March 2025 serves as a platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration among scientists, policymakers and development practitioners, with a focus on tackling pressing global challenges such as increasing hunger, extreme weather events, conflicts, inequality, and resource limitations. “It is essential that all initiatives, policies, and programmes deliver concrete, coherent, sustainable, and effective results,” Qu noted.

FAO has strengthened its commitment to evaluation under the leadership of the Director-General, transforming its Office of Evaluation to enhance professionalism, regional engagement, and alignment with country needs. This week, FAO and its partners will launch the Eval-for-Earth initiative, further reinforcing the Organization’s dedication to leveraging evaluation for sustainable development.

The Director-General reaffirmed FAO’s commitment to the Four Betters—better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life—highlighting that evaluation plays a fundamental role in ensuring progress towards these goals while leaving no one behind.

The Joint High-Level Global Conference on Multi-Dimensional Evaluation for Influence and Transformation serves as a key milestone in fostering dialogue and advancing collaboration on evaluation methodologies that drive sustainable impact in the agrifood sector and beyond. It aims to strengthen the role of evaluation in shaping policies, investments, and innovations, maximizing their contribution to sustainable development. It brings together key stakeholders, including representatives from international organizations, academia, and development institutions, to exchange insights and best practices in evaluation.
