FAO Director-General praises RBA Award Winners And Celebrates Collaborative Excellence

14 February 2025, Italy: FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu celebrated today the RBA Award of Excellence at the 48th Session of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) Governing Council in Rome, where Peru and the Pacific Islands were honored as the recipients.

The RBA Award of Excellence, a recognition of impactful collaboration among the Rome-based Agencies (RBA) – the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the World Food Programme (WFP) – highlights outstanding team achievements in jointly addressing global food security challenges.

Addressing the assembly during the award ceremony, Qu underscored the critical importance of inter-agency collaboration, praising the award winners as compelling examples of effective partnerships in action.

The Director-General thanked IFAD for its role in reviving the Award and emphasized that it provides a valuable opportunity to examine their collaborative synergy in tackling global issues related to food and agriculture.

‘’RBA collaboration takes many forms and takes place at all levels, but it is at the country level where the most tangible results are needed and achieved. Our colleagues based in Cameroon, Peru, the Pacific Islands and Türkiye have shown to be excellent examples of how to effectively, efficiently and coherently catalyze impact on the ground, and they have successfully demonstrated what can be achieved when we work together and with a holistic design,” he said.

Qu extended his warmest congratulations to Peru and the Pacific Islands, the 2025 awardees, acknowledging their exceptional accomplishments. He commended Peru’s country teams for spearheading policy transformation by strengthening public procurement systems and enhancing national food security strategies, resulting in scaled benefits for millions of people. He further lauded the Pacific Islands for their joint endeavors in promoting inclusivity and sustainability, with a strong emphasis on gender equality and climate resilience within their initiatives.

In this context, the Director-General underscored the collective strides made through RBA collaboration. “Together, we have improved food security through our joint efforts in supporting the transformation of global agrifood systems to be more efficient, more inclusive, more resilient and more sustainable.” He also highlighted their combined efforts in promoting rural development, empowering communities, including indigenous and local communities, and advancing opportunities for women and youth.

Looking ahead, the Qu emphasized that the successes celebrated through the RBA Award serve as a blueprint to further strengthen future collaboration. “As we celebrate these milestones, we recognize that solidarity, partnerships and collaboration, together with political will and commitments, are critical to addressing global challenges by identifying the solutions needed and ensuring their effective implementation to achieve transformation – a transformation that will ensure a better future for all,” he said, reiterating FAO’s commitment to continued systematic collaboration with its sister agencies, IFAD and WFP.
