FAO Director-General Inaugurates Food And Agriculture Pavilion at COP29, Highlighting Agrifood Systems’ Crucial Role In Climate Action
14 November 2024, Baku: The Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) QU Dongyu officially opened today the Food and Agriculture Pavilion at the UN Climate Conference COP29 in Baku. This collaborative space, hosted in partnership with the Consortium of International Agricultural Research Centers (CGIAR), aims to drive decisive action in addressing the impacts of the climate crisis on food and agriculture.
At the opening event, and along CGIAR Executive Managing Director Ismahane Elouafi, Qu emphasized the urgent need for collective action to combat climate change, highlighting the crucial role of agrifood systems in this endeavor. He stressed the commitment of FAO and CGIAR to support countries and farmers in adapting to climate change impacts and mitigating emissions from food production, transportation, and consumption.
“We are standing together for the farmers and for the future”, the Director-General said, while thanking CGIAR for their long-standing partnership with FAO.
The pavilion serves as a platform showcasing solutions derived from transforming agrifood systems to address climate change, biodiversity loss, land degradation, food insecurity, and poverty. Over the next 12 days, it will be a hub for knowledge exchange and decisive action in the collective fight against the impacts of the climate crisis.
In this context, the space will host a diverse range of events throughout COP29, addressing topics such as the integration of agrifood systems into Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and the role of agrifood systems in voluntary carbon markets. It will also serve as a venue for showcasing COP Presidency initiatives, including the Food and Agriculture for Sustainable Transformation (FAST) Partnership from COP27 and the Baku Harmoniya Climate Initiative for Farmers launched by the COP29 Presidency.
The Director-General called for collaborative efforts to transform global agrifood systems, making them more efficient, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable. He reiterated the importance of achieving better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life for all, leaving no one behind, the core of FAO’s strategic framework.
The Food and Agriculture Pavilion is envisioned as a hub for stakeholders across the agrifood and climate sectors, including governments, civil society, the private sector, academia, scientists, farmers, producers, consumers, women, and youth. It is designed to foster ambitious collaborations and drive the implementation of agrifood system solutions to address climate change.
COP29, taking place in Baku from 11-22 November is focused on advancing the goals of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Paris Agreement. The conference aims to accelerate efforts to limit global warming, adapt to climate change impacts, and mobilize financing for climate action.
