22 October 2022, China: The Standardization Administration of China designated the Spice and Beverage Crops Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences (CATAS) as national counterpart for the Cocoa Subcommittee of the Technical Committee on Food Products of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO/TC 34/SC 18) in early October, 2022.

The CATAS will lead comparative studies between international standard on cocoa and domestic ones as well as localization of international standard by coordinating domestic institutes. The CATAS will also participate in international standard-setting on behalf of China, increasing China’s voice in this field.

Thanks to CATAS’s constant efforts, China’s clout has been greatly increased in the standardization of tropical crops over past years. China’s status has been elevated from Observing Member to Participating Member of ISO Coffee Subcommittee. The CATAS led the compilation of ISO international standard on natural rubber, the first ISO international standard in tropic crops led by China. The CATAS also led or participated in 34 national standard-setting and 213 industry standard-setting. In addition, the CATAS organized the translation of up to 10 standards on natural rubber, banana, cassava and others into five languages, including Khmer, Vietnamese and Lao.

Founded in 1947, the ISO, one of the three major international standardization organizations, brings together experts to share knowledge and develop voluntary, consensus-based, market relevant International Standards. Established in 2014, the Cocoa Subcommittee (ISO/TC 34/SC 18) has 26 Participating Members and 28 Observing Members.
