Bilateral meeting with the Director of the Brazilian Cooperation Agency (ABC), Ambassador Ruy Pereira

18 November 2024, Rio de Janeiro: FAO Director-General, QU Dongyu, met with Ambassador Ruy Pereira, Director of the Brazilian Cooperation Agency (ABC), on the margins of the G20 Leaders’ Summit.

Ambassador Pereira thanked the Director-General for the meeting and welcomed the signature of the FAO-Brazil Country Programming Framework, a concrete step towards a closer cooperation.

The Director-General reaffirmed FAO’s full support to President Lula’s agenda, especially through the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty. He also emphasized the critical role of Brazil for strengthening South-South and Triangular Cooperation, emphasizing the importance of investing in youth and developing local capacity as critical investments in the future.

Ambassador Pereira suggested a forward-looking cooperation agreement for long-term planning between FAO and the Government of Brazil that would facilitate improved better planning around areas of common interest, such as enhanced use of technology, knowledge and expertise in tropical agriculture, policy assistance and capacity development.

The Director-General referred to the strategic role of Brazil in the agriculture sector, elaborating that Brazil’s agrifood system transformation did not concern only Brazil, but would support global food security.

The pair concluded by agreeing to further strengthening collaboration through enhanced coordination among key government ministries and relevant international agencies.
