Bilateral meeting with H.E. Dina Ercilia Boluarte Zegarra, President of the Republic of Peru

14 November 2024, Peru: he FAO Director-General, QU Dongyu, and Her Excellency Dina Ercilia Boluarte Zegarra, President of the Republic of Peru, met on the margins of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Ministerial Meeting in Lima. 

The President welcomed the FAO Director-General to Peru and expressed appreciation for the excellent collaboration and ongoing support provided by the Organization. The President further requested FAO’s support for the preparations for the 11th Session of the Governing Body of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture to be hosted by Peru in November 2025.

The President also elaborated on the importance of biodiversity for Peru, as well as the Government’s commitment to further enhancing and promoting indigenous and traditional knowledge for food security and to safeguard biodiversity, highlighting priorities with a central focus on economic development, while preserving the environment.

The President expressed her plans to reduce food loss and waste to eradicate food insecurity and improve nutrition in the country, for which the Director-General reaffirmed FAO’s technical support, noting it was an important area of work for the Organization and that it had broad expertise and knowledge to share with Peru.

The Director-General expressed his appreciation to Peru for the fruitful collaboration and expressed his pleasure in having returned to the country where he had started his career. The Director-General reaffirmed FAO’s commitment to supporting the Government of Peru in preserving its biodiversity, food diversity and especially its traditional and indigenous knowledge, particularly in view of the climate crisis. He also highlighted the importance of promoting climate resistant food product, noting that Peru’s traditional knowledge in this area could help many countries across the world.

The Director-General informed the President of the preparations which were underway in the Organization for the 80th Anniversary of FAO to be celebrated during the World Food Forum in October 2025, as well as the official opening of the FAO Food and Agriculture Museum & Network where food products, their diversity and traditional agricultural practices, could be showcased.
