Bilateral meeting with H.E. Charles Michel, President of the European Council

25 September 2024, New York:  On the sidelines of the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, the FAO Director-General, Dr QU Dongyi, met with H.E. Charles Michel, President of the European Council.

The Director-General expressed his appreciation for the support of the European Union to FAO’s mandate and reaffirmed his will to continue working together to ensure that FAO is fit for purpose to meet current and future challenges related to food insecurity, towards a renaissance of the Organization.

The Director-General invited the European Union to use FAO more actively as a platform to network with partners, share its experiences and spur innovation, as well as to identify investment and financing opportunities to transform global agrifood systems, to produce more with less to feed a growing global population. In this regard, the Director-General referred to the FAO flagship Hand-in-Hand Initiative, and the Hand-in-Hand Investment Forum held annually under the umbrella of the  World Food Forum, which provided an important global platform.

President Michel conveyed his appreciation for the work of FAO and referred to the importance of FAO for the European Union. President Michel further highlighted the European Union’s support for FAO’s role in the humanitarian response in conflict-affected areas such as Gaza and Ukraine.

 The pair agreed to continue collaborating towards the transformation of global agrifood systems in support of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
