49th session of the UN High-Level Committee on Management: FAO Director-General highlights need for effective and efficient collaboration

07 April 2025, Rome: Efficiency, effectiveness, and coherent and fraternal collaboration are critical within and across the UN system in order to continue addressing evolving global challenges and achieving excellence, FAO Director-General QU Dongyu noted today at the opening of the 49th session of the High-Level Committee on Management (HLCM).

“This session is a good reminder of our shared history and the continued relevance of our collective work,” he said, addressing the Committee and its members.

The Director-General also spoke of FAO’s focus on strengthening business operations and enhancing workforce management “to effectively deliver for the people we serve,” especially at a time of increasing demands on the UN, marked by resource constraints.

The HLCM is the UN’s principal inter-agency body that coordinates, identifies, and analyzes administrative management reforms to enhance efficiency and streamline business practices. The Committee is comprised of senior administrative managers from the member organizations of the United Nations system who meet twice a year.

This year, in the lead-up to FAO’s 80th birthday on 16 October, eight days before the United Nations’ 80th anniversary, the HLCM session hosted by FAO commemorates the shared purpose and relevance of both entities.

Accordingly, the FAO Director-General highlighted the key role of the High-Level Committee on Management “in driving reforms and promoting innovations that enhance efficiency, transparency and accountability.” He concluded by underscoring the importance of increased solidarity “to better respond to global interconnected and multifaceted challenges and assist our Members in turning these challenges into opportunities.”

The topics to be discussed in the upcoming days will reflect the evolving needs of the UN system and the world at large, touching on areas such as security, health, safety and well-being, and funding, among others, which impact our respective ability to operate effectively and inclusively.

FAO’s continued commitment in working with the High-Level Committee on Management will promote common goals and find practical solutions that benefit the overall UN system.
