Timely Irrigation and Weed Management Crucial for Wheat Crop, Advises ICAR-IIWBR
11 March 2025, New Delhi: In its latest advisory for early March, the ICAR-Indian Institute of Wheat and Barley Research (IIWBR), Karnal, has emphasized the importance of timely irrigation and weed management for wheat crops across different zones of India.
The institute advises farmers to judiciously irrigate fields to conserve water and reduce costs. Additionally, farmers should check weather forecasts before irrigation to avoid excess water accumulation due to unexpected rainfall.
Proper weed management at this stage is essential to ensure optimal crop growth. Moreover, if yellowing in the crop is observed, excessive nitrogen application, especially in foggy or cloudy conditions, should be avoided to prevent further stress on the plants.
Farmers should also monitor their crops regularly for yellow rust and brown rust infections and seek guidance from nearby agricultural institutions such as SAUs and KVKs if needed.
This advisory underscores the need for scientific irrigation and fertilization practices to ensure a healthy wheat harvest.
