Start Sowing Green Gram Now: Best Varieties and Seed Treatment Practices – IARI Advisory

Agriculture Advisory for Indian Farmers from Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI)

04 May 2025, New Delhi: As summer progresses and temperatures remain favourable, farmers are advised to begin sowing green gram (moong) to make full use of the available growing window. According to experts from the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), this is the ideal time for green gram cultivation, provided there is sufficient soil moisture for proper seed germination and early growth. With the right variety selection and seed treatment, farmers can look forward to a healthy and profitable crop.

Green gram is a popular pulse crop known for its short duration, nutritional value, and suitability for intercropping. IARI recommends several high-yielding and disease-resistant varieties for sowing during this season. These include Pusa Visal, Pusa Ratna, Pusa 5931, Pusa Baisakhi, PDM-11, SML-32, SML-668, and Samrat. These varieties have been developed to perform well under varying agro-climatic conditions and are suitable for both irrigated and rainfed areas.

Before sowing, seed treatment is a crucial step that should not be skipped. Farmers are advised to treat green gram seeds with crop-specific Rhizobium culture. Rhizobium bacteria help the plant fix atmospheric nitrogen, reducing the need for external nitrogen fertilizers and improving soil fertility. Along with Rhizobium, the use of phosphorus-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) is recommended to enhance the plant’s ability to absorb phosphorus from the soil, ensuring better root development and plant health.

Proper soil moisture is essential for seed germination. Farmers must ensure that fields are either freshly irrigated or have retained enough residual moisture from previous rainfall or irrigation events. Inadequate moisture can lead to poor germination, uneven crop stand, and reduced yields. If required, a pre-sowing irrigation should be done to ensure uniform moisture across the sowing depth.

Green gram sown at this time benefits from the warm weather and a relatively low pest load in early stages. However, timely weeding, irrigation, and monitoring for pests and diseases are necessary for successful cultivation. Farmers are encouraged to follow the full package of practices recommended for their region to get the best results.

With the increasing demand for pulses in the domestic market, timely sowing and proper crop management of green gram can provide a significant boost to farmer incomes while contributing to national nutritional security.
