Ram Kumar Yadav: Transforming Dragon Fruit Cultivation in Rajasthan

19 December 2024, Jaipur: In the arid terrains of Rajasthan, where traditional farming faces relentless challenges, Ram Kumar Yadav from Dadar Bawadi, Jaipur District, has emerged as a pioneer in dragon fruit cultivation. His story is a testament to the transformative power of innovation, investment, and scientific training in agriculture.

In 2022, Ram Kumar’s curiosity for sustainable farming led him to ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) scientists, who introduced him to dragon fruit. This tropical superfood, known for its high nutritional value and adaptability to low water conditions, presented a promising opportunity for the region’s challenging climate.

Ram’s journey took a decisive turn in March 2022 when he attended a specialized training program on dragon fruit cultivation. Guided by ICAR-KVK experts, he ventured into this new crop by setting up a 0.4-hectare unit on his farm. He planted 1,320 Allis Red dragon fruit plants, supported by 330 cemented poles, and invested ₹3 lakh in advanced agricultural practices, including drip irrigation, timely pruning, and efficient nutrient management. The consistent guidance from KVK scientists ensured his efforts were on the right track.

By July 2024, Ram began reaping the benefits of his hard work. Each plant yielded an impressive 10-12 fruits, which he sold for ₹60-70 per fruit. This earned him approximately ₹1.8 lakh within a few months, with projections of an additional ₹1.5 lakh by October 2024.

Recognizing his achievements, the Department of Agriculture, Government of Rajasthan, awarded him the prestigious title of ‘District Innovative Farmer’, along with a cash prize of ₹25,000. Inspired by his success, many local farmers have started exploring dragon fruit cultivation, creating a ripple effect of agricultural innovation in the region.

Ram Kumar Yadav’s journey is a shining example of how investments in innovative crops and scientific training can transform traditional farming. His story underscores the potential of dragon fruit cultivation in Rajasthan, paving the way for a more sustainable and prosperous agricultural future.
