Protect Tomato, Brinjal, and Chilli Crops from Heat Stress with NAA Spray – IARI Advisory

Agriculture Advisory for Indian Farmers from Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI)

04 May 2025, New Delhi: With temperatures steadily rising across northern India, vegetable crops such as tomato, brinjal, and chilli are becoming increasingly vulnerable to heat stress. High temperatures during the flowering and fruit-setting stages can severely affect the productivity of these crops by halting fruit development and causing flower drop. To mitigate this risk, the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) has advised farmers to spray a 2% solution of Naphthalene Acetic Acid (NAA) on these crops.

NAA is a plant growth regulator that helps in reducing flower drop and promoting fruit setting even under stressful environmental conditions. When applied at the right concentration and timing, it can significantly improve fruit retention, thereby ensuring better yields. The 2% solution should be carefully prepared and sprayed during the early morning or late evening hours to avoid evaporation and ensure maximum uptake by the plants.

It is important for farmers to regularly monitor their fields for signs of heat stress, such as leaf curling, flower shedding, or delayed fruit formation. Immediate application of NAA during such conditions can help the crops recover and continue their reproductive cycle. Additionally, maintaining proper soil moisture through irrigation and mulching can provide further protection against the harsh summer sun.

By integrating NAA spray with good agronomic practices, farmers can safeguard their tomato, brinjal, and chilli crops and avoid major losses due to weather-induced stress. This timely intervention is especially critical for small and marginal farmers who rely heavily on vegetable cultivation for income and household nutrition.
