Nano Urea Plus: A New Option, Trials, and Possibilities
20 May 2025, New Delhi: Nano Urea Plus, developed by the Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative (IFFCO), has recently been introduced as an alternative to conventional urea. This product is based on nanotechnology and is designed for foliar application in liquid form. Its primary goal is to meet the nitrogen needs of crops while improving the efficiency of nutrient use.
What is Nano Urea Plus?
Nano Urea Plus contains around 20% nitrogen. It includes three forms of nitrogen—amide, ammonical, and amino—activated with biopolymers. According to the manufacturer, the formulation enhances plant absorption. The particle size is said to be under 100 nanometers, allowing it to spread more uniformly over leaf surfaces and be absorbed quickly.
Application Method and Timing
It is intended for foliar spray using regular knob sprayers, power sprayers, or drones. The recommended dosage is between 250 to 500 ml per acre, depending on the crop’s stage and requirement.
The ideal spray stages include tillering, pre-flowering, and grain filling. Environmental conditions such as rainfall may require repeat applications, especially if rain occurs within a few hours of spraying.
Benefits and Limitations: A Two-Sided View
Supporters of the product claim that Nano Urea Plus can produce similar or better results than conventional urea while using significantly less volume. It may also help reduce fertilizer-related costs and minimize nitrogen runoff into soil and water sources.
However, feedback on its effectiveness has been mixed. In some cases, crop response has varied, possibly due to differences in soil conditions, crop type, and climate. Among agricultural scientists, opinions differ on the idea of completely replacing granular urea with nano formulations.
