Mealy Bug Infestation in Mango Orchards: Prevention and Control
12 March 2025, New Delhi: Mealy bugs are a persistent threat in mango orchards, emerging from early January and continuing their activity until May. The ICAR-Central Institute for Subtropical Horticulture (CISH), Rehmankhera, Lucknow, has advised that these pests can cause significant damage to mango panicles and emerging leaves if not managed in time. Feeding by mealy bugs results in stunted growth and reduced fruit production, making early intervention crucial.
If preventive measures fail and mealy bugs have already reached the panicles and young leaves, ICAR-CISH recommends immediate action. Applying insecticide dust around tree trunks can help kill the nymphs attempting to climb up the tree. If nymphs have already started ascending, farmers should spray Spirotetramat 11.01% + Imidacloprid 11.01% SC at the recommended dosage per liter of water for effective control.
Besides chemical measures, maintaining orchard sanitation by removing weeds, pruning infested branches, and avoiding excessive use of nitrogen-based fertilizers can help in reducing mealy bug populations. By following these measures, farmers can prevent severe damage and ensure a healthy mango crop.
