Managing Mango Thrips: Early Detection and Effective Solutions

12 March 2025, New Delhi: The ICAR-Central Institute for Subtropical Horticulture (CISH), Rehmankhera, Lucknow, has reported the emergence of mango thrips in several orchards across India. These tiny pests attack panicles and young leaves, feeding on plant tissues and causing scarring, curling, and poor fruit development. If not controlled in time, thrips can significantly reduce the overall yield by damaging the delicate structures of the mango tree during its crucial growth phase.

To prevent serious damage, farmers should regularly inspect their orchards for signs of thrips infestation. Early detection is essential to control the pest before it spreads widely. ICAR-CISH advises the use of insecticides such as Imidacloprid 17.8SL, Tolfenpyrad 15% EC, or Thiamethoxam 25WG, applied at the recommended dosage per liter of water. Timely spraying of these insecticides ensures that thrips do not disrupt flowering and fruiting.

In addition to chemical control, orchard hygiene is essential. Removing weeds and alternative host plants from the orchard’s surroundings helps reduce thrips populations. By implementing these measures, farmers can effectively manage thrips infestations and protect their mango crops.
