Inflorescence Midge in Mango: Signs, Impact, and Control Measures
12 March 2025, New Delhi: The ICAR-Central Institute for Subtropical Horticulture (CISH), Rehmankhera, Lucknow, has issued an advisory regarding the increasing incidence of inflorescence midge in mango orchards. This pest is a significant threat during the inflorescence emergence period, as it primarily targets soft young shoots, tender leaves, and flowers. The damage appears as tiny black spots and boreholes on inflorescences, leading to restricted growth and eventual drying up of affected panicles.
Recent observations indicate that the inflorescence midge has already emerged in some mango orchards, causing damage to panicles. If not controlled in time, this pest can severely impact fruit setting and overall yield. ICAR-CISH recommends foliar spraying of Imidacloprid 17.8SL or Thiamethoxam 25WG at the prescribed dosage per liter of water. Additionally, adding a sticker solution enhances the spray’s effectiveness by improving adherence to plant surfaces.
Farmers are advised to regularly monitor their orchards and apply pest control measures at the first sign of infestation. Keeping orchards clean, removing fallen plant debris, and avoiding excessive nitrogen fertilizer application can also help in reducing infestations. Proper management of inflorescence midge ensures better flower retention and improved fruit-setting rates.
