IARI Advisory: Harvesting of Vegetables and Okra Crop Management Tips

Technical Advisory from Indian Agriculture Research Institute (IARI) for Indian Farmers

08 April 2025, New Delhi: In light of the prevailing weather, the IARI Advisory suggests that farmers should harvest mature vegetables during the early morning or late evening hours. This helps maintain freshness and reduces spoilage caused by heat. The harvested produce should be kept in shade to preserve quality and shelf life.

Post-harvest, farmers growing okra are advised to apply urea at the rate of 5–10 kg per acre to promote further flowering and fruiting. Monitoring for mite infestation is crucial, and if the population exceeds ETL (Economic Threshold Level), spraying Ethion @ 1.5–2 ml/litre of water is recommended on clear days. These timely actions will help maintain the health and productivity of okra crops.
