IARI Advisory: Best Practices for Safe Grain Storage After Harvest
Technical Advisory from Indian Agriculture Research Institute (IARI) for Indian Farmers
08 April 2025, New Delhi: As per the latest IARI Advisory, farmers are urged to follow meticulous post-harvest grain storage practices to prevent spoilage and pest infestation. Grains must be cleaned thoroughly and dried to ensure moisture content is not more than 12%. Proper drying is essential to prevent fungal growth and ensure long-term storage quality. Before storing, godowns should be cleared of old grains and debris from previous harvests. Any cracks or crevices in walls should be cleaned and repaired to prevent insect entry and rodent infestation.
Additionally, IARI recommends treating gunny bags with a 5% neem solution. Once treated, these bags should be sun-dried to kill any hidden pest eggs, larvae, or disease spores. Such preparation ensures that the storage environment remains pest-free and reduces the chance of post-harvest losses. These measures, as outlined in the IARI Advisory, are vital for maintaining grain quality and ensuring food security at the farm level.
