Green Manure Crops for Soil Health After Rabi Harvest: Cluster Bean, Daincha, and More – IARI Advisory

Agriculture Advisory for Indian Farmers from Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI)

04 May 2025, New Delhi: After the harvest of rabi crops, it is essential for farmers to prepare their fields in a way that sustains and enhances soil fertility for the upcoming season. One of the most effective and eco-friendly practices recommended by the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) is the cultivation of green manure crops. These crops not only enrich the soil with essential nutrients but also improve soil structure and organic matter content, which leads to better yields in the long run.

Farmers who have completed their rabi harvest are advised to immediately sow green manure crops in their fields to make the most of residual moisture and rising temperatures. Crops such as cluster bean, daincha (Sesbania aculeata), senai (Cassia), and lobia (cowpea) are particularly suited for this purpose. These crops grow quickly and can be incorporated into the soil within a few weeks, providing valuable biomass that decomposes and adds nitrogen and organic carbon to the soil.

Timely sowing is crucial for green manure crops to establish well. Farmers must ensure that the soil retains adequate moisture before sowing, as this promotes uniform germination and healthy plant development. Light irrigation may be required in case of insufficient moisture levels. Green manure crops should ideally be ploughed back into the soil before flowering to maximize nutrient availability.

By adopting green manuring, farmers can reduce their dependence on chemical fertilizers while improving the sustainability and productivity of their farming systems. The practice also helps suppress weeds, break pest and disease cycles, and enhances water retention in the soil, making it an excellent preparatory step before the kharif sowing season.
