Fodder Maize and Baby Corn Sowing Picks Up with Suitable Summer Temperatures – IARI Advisory
Agriculture Advisory for Indian Farmers from Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI)
04 May 2025, New Delhi: The rising temperatures and suitable soil moisture levels present an ideal opportunity for farmers to begin sowing fodder crops such as maize and cowpea (lobia), as well as baby corn. The Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) has recommended this period for sowing these crops, which can help meet the increasing fodder demand for livestock and also generate extra income through baby corn cultivation.
For fodder maize, African Tall remains the most popular variety. It is known for its quick growth, high biomass production, and nutritional value, making it ideal for dairy farmers. African Tall typically matures in 60 to 70 days and provides lush green fodder that is rich in protein and digestibility. The crop performs well under high temperatures, provided it is irrigated at regular intervals and weeds are controlled during the early stages.
Farmers are also advised to sow lobia, which serves as a dual-purpose crop – both as green fodder and as a leguminous cover crop that fixes atmospheric nitrogen in the soil. Lobia enriches the soil and reduces the need for synthetic nitrogen fertilisers in the following crop cycle. In regions where fodder shortage is acute during summer, timely sowing of lobia can help bridge the green fodder gap.
Another valuable crop during this time is baby corn. IARI recommends sowing the hybrid variety HM-4, which is well-suited for baby corn production due to its short duration and tender cobs. Baby corn is harvested 45–50 days after sowing, making it a profitable intercrop or standalone crop. With growing demand from urban markets, hotels, and food processors, baby corn can provide farmers with attractive returns if marketed effectively.
To ensure successful germination and early growth, the soil should be well-prepared with at least one deep ploughing followed by 1–2 cross harrowings. Moisture should be conserved in the soil, and sowing should be done immediately after irrigation or pre-monsoon rains.
Farmers should also opt for seed treatment using appropriate Rhizobium culture (in the case of lobia) and phosphorus-solubilizing bacteria, which enhances nutrient uptake and root development. Maintaining proper seed rate, row spacing, and timely weeding are essential for optimal crop performance.
Sowing fodder maize, lobia, and baby corn during this period not only strengthens fodder security for livestock but also opens a commercial window for income generation in summer months. By following IARI’s advisory, farmers can make the most of this cropping season.
