Farmers Advised to Manage Heat Stress and Prevent Crop Lodging in Wheat
11 March 2025, New Delhi: With rising temperatures across wheat-growing regions, the ICAR-Indian Institute of Wheat and Barley Research (IIWBR), Karnal, has issued an important advisory on irrigation management and heat stress mitigation.
To prevent crop lodging, farmers should irrigate their fields when wind speeds are low, preferably in the evening hours. If high temperatures persist for over three days, spraying muriate of potash (0.2%) or potassium nitrate (2%) after anthesis is recommended to mitigate heat stress.
For farmers in Southern Haryana and Northern Rajasthan, sprinkler irrigation for one hour between 2:00 to 2:30 pm on extremely hot days can help regulate crop temperature.
By following these recommendations, farmers can reduce yield losses due to extreme weather conditions and ensure better crop resilience.
