Controlling Buckeye Rot in Tomato Using Propineb 70% WP

Controlling Buckeye Rot in Tomato in India

18 May 2025, New Delhi: Tomato crops are highly vulnerable to various fungal diseases, with Buckeye Rot being one of the most destructive, especially under humid and warm conditions. This disease affects tomato fruits, causing water-soaked lesions that later develop into large, circular, brown spots with concentric rings resembling a buckeye—hence the name. If not managed in time, it can lead to significant crop loss.

A proven and approved fungicide for controlling Buckeye Rot in tomatoes is Propineb 70% WP, a contact fungicide that inhibits spore germination and fungal growth. The product is registered and approved by Central Insecticide Bureau for use in tomato farming.

The recommended active ingredient (a.i.) concentration for application is 0.21% or 210 grams per 100 liters of water, while the formulated product should be applied at 0.30% or 300 grams per 100 liters of water. This formulation ensures sufficient coverage and effective disease control across the crop canopy.

There is no fixed dilution per hectare, as it varies depending on the size of the plant and the spraying equipment used. Hence, farmers are advised to adjust the dilution volume based on field conditions and ensure uniform spray coverage.

To maintain food safety and comply with regulations, a waiting period of 10 days must be observed between the last fungicide application and the harvest of tomato fruits. This ensures that any chemical residues degrade to safe levels before the produce reaches the consumer.

By following the correct dosage and interval, farmers can effectively control Buckeye Rot, protect fruit quality, and maintain their yield. Propineb 70% WP offers a reliable defense against this pathogen and is an important tool in integrated disease management strategies for tomato cultivation.
