Amid Civil Unrest, Bangladesh Secures Mango Export Deal with China
05 August 2024, China: In a significant trade development, Bangladesh has received approval from China to export fresh mangoes. This authorization, announced through ‘Announcement No. 94 of 2024’ by China’s General Administration of Customs, follows the signing of the ‘Protocol of Phytosanitary Requirements for Exporting Fresh Mangoes from Bangladesh to China’ in Beijing.
The agreement is poised to open the Chinese market to Bangladeshi mangoes, addressing a growing demand for imported fruits. In the first half of 2021 alone, China’s fruit imports totaled $172 billion.
China’s interest in Bangladeshi mangoes emerged last year, when a delegation proposed importing mangoes and other fruits such as jackfruit. Subsequent evaluations by a Chinese expert team led to the green light for exports. This development is expected to help reduce Bangladesh’s trade deficit with China and establish mangoes as a key export product, given their high demand in the Chinese market.
China’s mango imports have surged significantly, with both fresh and processed mangoes increasing fivefold between 2019 and 2020. The country now averages 84,000 tonnes of mango imports annually, reflecting a rising appetite for tropical fruits that domestic production cannot fully satisfy. This growing demand presents a valuable opportunity for Bangladesh to expand its mango export market, building on recent growth in the sector.
