Agri Scientist Advises Farmers on Managing Yellow Mosaic Virus in Summer Moong Crop
15 May 2025, New Delhi: Neemuch: Dr. Mukesh Bankolia, Senior Scientist at Krishi Vigyan Kendra, has issued an advisory to farmers cultivating summer moong (green gram), urging them to remain vigilant against Yellow Mosaic Virus (YMV), a viral disease commonly transmitted by whiteflies.
Dr. Bankolia explained that the virus spreads from infected to healthy plants through whiteflies, which are sap-sucking insects. He recommended that farmers uproot and destroy infected plants in the early stages of the disease to prevent its further spread.
To control the whitefly population, he advised the use of yellow sticky traps in the field, which effectively attract and trap the whiteflies, thus reducing their numbers.
Looking ahead to the next summer moong season, Dr. Bankolia suggested that farmers opt for virus-resistant varieties to safeguard their crops against Yellow Mosaic Virus.
For chemical control of the whitefly, which is the vector of the disease, he recommended the following insecticides:
- Thiamethoxam 25 WG at the rate of 40 grams per acre
- OR Imidacloprid 17.8 SL at 50 milliliters per acre
These insecticides should be applied either in the morning or evening using a power sprayer, with 100 to 125 liters of water per acre.
Dr. Bankolia emphasized the importance of timely preventive measures to protect the moong crop from significant losses due to Yellow Mosaic Virus.
