10 July 2024, New Delhi: The four most dangerous and venomous snakes found in India are the Indian Cobra (Spectacled), Dabauya (Russell’s Viper), Afaai (Saw Scaled Viper) and Krait (Common Krait). In India, about 12 lakh people have died due to snake bites in the last 20 years which is 58,000 on average every year.

Snake bites kill 80,000 to 1,38,000 people in the world and three times more people lose their body parts or become disabled.

Afai (Saw Scaled Viper) – Responsible for Most Deaths in India

Afai, this snake is responsible for most snake bites and deaths in India. These snakes are active in the morning, evening, night or even during the day. This snake is found in sand, rocks, soft soil, bushes and various places. They are often found hiding under loose rocks. Krait is a species of snake found in the forests of the Indian subcontinent. This snake is usually black or blue in color. It has white stripes on it. It is a very poisonous snake. These snakes mostly come out at night. At night when people are sleeping, they enter the bed and bite secretly. Their teeth are so thin that we do not even know about the snake bite while sleeping. By the time the snake bite is detected, death occurs.

10 Important Steps For First Aid In Case Of Snake Bite:

Please note that you can do the first aid yourself, but it is important to go to the nearest hospital at the earliest.

1. Stay calm: Panic can increase the heart rate, which can cause the poison to spread rapidly.
2. Remove any constricting items: Loosen or remove tight clothing, jewelry or watches that may constrict the affected area.
3. Keep the affected limb below the level of the heart: This can help reduce the flow of venom through the bloodstream.
4. Do not attempt to suck out the venom: This method is ineffective and can cause more harm.
5. Do not apply a tourniquet or constricting bandage to stop blood flow: This can also make the condition worse.

6. Do not use ice or heat: Extreme temperatures can also worsen the condition.
7. Keep the wound clean: Clean the bite area with soap and water.
8. Monitor vital signs: Monitor the person’s temperature, pulse and breathing rate.
9. Get medical help immediately: If possible, contact emergency medical services or take the person to a hospital.
10. IMPORTANT: If you are in an area with a mobile phone, take a picture of the snake (if possible) and show it to medical professionals for identification. Remember, prompt medical attention is critical in snake bite cases. If you are in a remote area, call for emergency help as soon as possible. Please note that these steps are general guidelines and may vary depending on the specific type of snake and the person’s condition. Always consult medical professionals for proper treatment.
