Simon’s Seasonal Insights – Onions, August 2024
14 August 2024, UK: Simon’s Seasonal Insights – Onions, August 2024
Crops catch up
Drilled crops have grown quickly due to hotter and brighter weather since mid-July, even late sown crops are bulbing well now. The earliest drilled crops could start harvest from the third week in August.
Support continued growth
With dry soils and the challenge of maintaining a reasonable moisture deficit, it may be worth considering an application of biostimulant products like QUANTISTM. Data from a range of crops shows that QUANTISTM helps the crop maintain growth during periods of drought stress, by providing carbohydrates, improving cell rigidity and reducing cell damage.
Downy mildew as fall over approaches
With a good percentage of late sown crops, fungicide applications are likely to continue through August and into September. It is often a challenge to find enough products with a short harvest interval to continue applications in later crops. ORONDIS® Plus + AMISTAR® with a 14 day harvest interval is an option if not all applications have been made. ORONDIS® Plus + AMISTAR® in alternation with Unicur and Cassiopeia makes a strong strategy to help maintain disease free leaf and build yield.
Onion pests still a focus
Thrips have been very noticeable through mid-August as they continue to migrate from cereal crops. This pest damages the leaves, reducing the photosynthetic ability, and if poorly controlled they can cause cosmetic damage to the bulb.
Thrip damage
MINECTO® One is currently the most effective product to control this pest. Applications should be made as the number of thrips on plants starts to increase and before a major infestation occurs. Alternating with other products is needed to ensure adequate control.
A good strategy is to apply an alternative product, such as Movento, when the first thrip nymphs are found. Continue to monitor activity and if the number of thrips continues to increase, applications of MINECTO® One at this stage will give best control.
