Oxazolidinones, Isoxazoles, and Isothiazolones: New Approaches to Fungicide Resistance Management

26 February 2025, New Delhi: Introduction to Oxazolidinones, Isoxazoles, and Isothiazolones

Oxazolidinones, isoxazoles, and isothiazolones are newer classes of fungicides that offer novel ways to combat fungal infections in crops. These chemicals target specific pathways in fungi that are essential for their survival and reproduction. While they show promise in disease management, they are not immune to the risk of resistance development.

Understanding the Resistance Risk

The development of resistance to oxazolidinones, isoxazoles, and isothiazolones is a significant concern, particularly in Oomycetes and other fungal pathogens. These fungicides are classified as high-risk due to the potential for cross-resistance with other fungicide classes. Proper resistance management is key to ensuring that these chemicals remain effective over time.

Resistance Management Strategies

To mitigate the risk of resistance, it is essential to rotate fungicide classes and integrate non-chemical control methods. FRAC recommends adopting an integrated pest management (IPM) approach that combines these fungicides with other disease management strategies. This will help preserve the efficacy of oxazolidinones, isoxazoles, and isothiazolones for future use in crop protection.
