Managing Mango Wilt in India: Chemical Control and Best Practices

12 March 2025, New Delhi: Mango wilt is a serious threat to mango orchards in India, causing significant yield losses for farmers. The disease initially presents as wilting of leaves, and within one to two months, the entire tree may dry up. A key symptom of mango wilt is excessive gum oozing from affected trees. Given the economic and cultural importance of mango cultivation in India, effective disease management is crucial to ensure healthy orchards and sustained production.

Chemical Management Strategies

To control mango wilt, it is crucial to avoid damage to the mango roots and implement appropriate chemical treatments in the root zone of infected trees. The application of fungicides such as Carbendazim 50WP at a concentration of 1 gram per litre of water, Thiophanate Methyl 70WP at 1 gram per litre of water, or Hexaconazole 5 SC at a concentration of 1 ml per litre of water has been found effective. The prepared fungicidal solution should be applied at a dosage of 25 litres per square meter (25 l/m²) in the root zone of infected trees. This treatment helps suppress the fungal infection and reduces disease progression.

Best Practices for Disease Management

Avoiding root injuries is essential, as damage to the roots can facilitate pathogen entry. Regular monitoring of mango trees allows for early detection of symptoms, enabling timely preventive measures. Proper drainage should be ensured to prevent water stagnation, which can promote fungal growth. Additionally, periodic soil treatment with recommended fungicides helps reduce fungal load and minimizes the spread of the disease. By implementing these chemical control measures alongside good cultural practices, mango growers can effectively manage mango wilt and protect their orchards from severe losses.
